SKILLS ASSESSMENTS/PLAYER DRAFTS: CYA assigns players to house teams for grades 3-12 on the basis of player drafts. For Boys grades 3-10 and Girls grades 3-8, skills assessments are held in mid to late November to allow the coaches to evaluate players and rank them for the player draft. Attendance at these skills assessments is highly encouraged but not required.
Skills assessments have been held for all leagues except 9-10 grade boys (scheduled for Dec. 1 &2). To see the skills assessments times and locations, click on the News, Boys House, or Girls House links on the left side of this page.
Note that teams in grades 1-2 are assigned by the league administrator on the basis of schools and neighborhoods. Teams for Boys grades 11-12 and Girls grades 9-10 are determined by the league administrators and coaches on the basis of previous experience since players in these age groups do not attend skills assessments.
PRACTICES: Practices will begin in late November or early December after each league forms its teams. These cannot yet be scheduled because CYA has not yet received our gym allocation from the Fairfax County Recreation Department. Practices (one-hour) are held on weeknights between 6-9 PM depending on the league and coach requirements.
GAMES: Games will begin in mid-December (tentatively the weekend of Dec. 13-14, but this may vary by league). Schedules have not yet been developed since CYA has not yet received our gym allocation from the Fairfax County Recreation Department. During the regular season, games are only held on the weekends, generally between the hours of 9 AM - 7 PM. During playoffs in March, some games are held on weeknights (by that time practices have come to an end).
