CYA Winter 2009-10 Basketball League

Program Summary

This coming Winter season (2009-010) CYA offers a house recreational program for players from 1st through 12th grade and participate in the Fairfax County Youth Basketball League program, commonly known as Travel or Select (generally for players in 4th to 8th grade). Games for Travel/Select and House begin in December and run through mid-March; practice for the Travel/Select program begins in October; House practices begin in mid to late November. Online registration began on September 15th and runs until early November. The registration cost is $135.50 (the same as in 2008-09) of which $100 goes to CYA basketball, $20 is a CYA admininstrative fee, $10 goes to the capital improvement fund, and $5.5 is the Fairfax County sports tax. Beginning October 16th, a $25 late fee is assessed as well for all late registrants in grades 1-8. To be assured placement on a team, those in grades 1-8 must have registered by October 31st; beginning November 1st players in grades 1-8 will only be accepted if space permits in their league. High school players have until November 29th to register.

UPDATE: The Travel tryouts for the Boys and Girls teams aged 10 through 14 have now been completed. All participants were contacted. Note that CYA will not be fielding a Boys 15 and under or Boys 18 and under travel team this year as FCYBL has an insufficient number of teams at these age levels.

HOUSE RECREATIONAL PROGRAM

The 1st grade program is strictly instructional, emphasizing skill development and basic understanding of the game. In 2nd grade, players are given the opportunity to test their skills in games that continue to focus more on instruction than competition.

The 3rd through 12th grade house leagues are progressively competitive leagues, though with a great deal of emphasis placed on continuing skill development, teamwork, and sportsmanship. House teams for all grades play at Chantilly area gyms, with the exception of high school girls. Since the high school girls participate in a Friendship League with neighboring programs, they may play some of their games at gyms in Vienna, Fairfax, Burke and Annandale

Skills assessments (to assist in the player drafts) for Grades 3-8 are held in early to mid-November. During the Winter season, teams in grades 2-10 play one game and hold one 1-hour practice per week from December through February. Girls and Boys Grades 11-12 play 1-2 games on weekends but do not hold weekly practices. Tournaments for grades 4-12 are held in March.

NOTE: For Boys Grades 9-12 teams will be formed using the draft system. A skills assessments may held in late November for Boys Grade 9. Girls Grades 9-12 do not hold skills assessments. Girls teams are assigned by the league administrator in cooperation with the coaches based on previous knowledge of participant skills. Grades 1-2 do not hold skills assessments as players are assigned to teams based on schools and neighborhoods.

COUNTY TRAVEL/SELECT TEAMS (FCYBL)

CYA offers those players with a higher skill level an opportunity to participate in the county-wide Fairfax County Youth Basketball League (commonly known as either "Travel" or "Select"). CYA’s FCYBL coaches are re-selected each year through an interview procress. During tryouts held in early October, the coaches select 10-11 players per team from among all those who participate in at least 2 travel tryouts. The number of teams per age group is determined by the talent available at tryouts (with a maximum of 3 teams per age group). Practice begins as soon as the teams are selected

This program requires a greater time commitment from participants for practice (3 hours per week instead of just 1) and games (1-2 per week). Most games are played at gyms across Fairfax County (often outside the Chantilly area) and in Falls Church, Arlington, or Alexandria. Programs are offered at the ages of 10 and under, 11 and under, 12 and under, 13 and under (Boys only), 14 and under (Girls only), 15 and under (Boys), and 18 and under (Boys). The placement of players is generally determined by their age as of October 1st , with two grade exceptions allowed per team. In addition, all CYA players must reside in Fairfax County and are generally limited to our allocated zip codes (22033, 20151, 20171, 22124, and 20120), with 2 zip code exceptions allowed per team (that is, two players per team who do not reside in one of the designed zip codes).

CYA will not be fielding a Boys 15 and under or Boys 18 and under travel team this year as FCYBL has an insufficient number of teams at these age levels for a viable league.
