This coming Winter season (2011-12) CYA offers a house recreational program for players from 1st through 12th grade and a travel program through the Fairfax County Youth Basketball League program (generally for players in 4th to 8th grade). Games for the Travel and House programs begin in December and run through mid-March; practice for the Travel program begins in October; House practices begin in mid to late November.

Online registration began on 18 September and runs until early November. The total registration cost is $145.00 for grades 2-8, $150.00 for grades 9-12, and $110.00 for grade 1; this total fee includes a $20 CYA admininstrative fee, $10 for the CYA indoor facilities capital improvement fund, and a $5.50 Fairfax County sports tax. Beginning October 24th, a $25 late fee is assessed as well for all late registrants in grades 1-8. To be assured placement on a team, those in grades 1-8 must have registered by October 31st; beginning November 1st players in grades 1-8 will only be accepted if space permits in their league. High school age players now have until November 27th to register without a late fee.

HOUSE RECREATIONAL PROGRAM

The 1st grade program is strictly instructional, emphasizing skill development and basic understanding of the game. In 2nd grade, players are given the opportunity to test their skills in games that continue to focus more on instruction than competition. The 3rd through 12th grade house leagues are progressively competitive leagues, though with a great deal of emphasis placed on continuing skill development, teamwork, and sportsmanship. House teams for all grades play at Chantilly area gyms, with the exception of high school girls. Since the high school girls participate in a Friendship League with neighboring programs, they may play some of their games at gyms in Vienna, Fairfax, Burke and Annandale

Skills assessments (to assist in the player drafts) for Grades 3-8 are held in early to mid-November. During the Winter season, teams in grades 2-10 play one game and hold one 1-hour practice per week from December through February. Girls and Boys Grades 11-12 play 1-2 games on weekends but do not hold weekly practices. Tournaments for grades 4-12 are held in March.

NOTE:  A skills assessments may held in late November for Boys Grade 9 and Boys Grade 10. Girls Grades 9-12 and Boys Grades 11-12 do not hold skills assessments; teams are assigned through a draft (boys) or by the league administrator (girls) in cooperation with the coaches based on previous knowledge of participant skills. Grades 1-2 do not hold skills assessments as players are assigned to teams based on schools and neighborhoods.

COUNTY TRAVEL/SELECT TEAMS (FCYBL)

NOTE: CYA Travel tryouts have now been completed (as of 10/7/11) and all teams have been formed.

CYA offers those players with a higher skill level an opportunity to participate in the county-wide Fairfax County Youth Basketball League(commonly known as  "Travel"). CYA’s FCYBL coaches are re-selected each year through an interview procress. During tryouts held in early October, the coaches select 10-11 players per team from among all those who participate in at least 2 travel tryouts. The number of teams per age group is determined by the talent available at tryouts (with a maximum of 3 teams per age group). Practice begins as soon as the teamsare selectedThis program requires a greater time commitment from participants for practice (3 hours per week instead of just 1) and games (1-2 per week). Most games are played at gyms across Fairfax County (often outside the Chantilly area) and in Falls Church, Arlington, or Alexandria. Programs are offered at 5th grade (formerly 10 and under), 6th grade (formerly 11 and under), 7th grade (formerly 12 and under), and 8th grade (formerly 13 and under for Boys, 14 and under for Girls). Note that the former age-based Travel divisions have been replaced by grade-based divisions so age-exceptions are no longer necessary. In addition, all CYA players must reside in Fairfax County and are generally limited to our allocated zip codes (22033, 20151, 20171, 22124, and 20120), with 2 zip code exceptions allowed per team (that is, two players per team who do not reside in one of the designed zip codes).
